The UK Coronavirus Immunology Consortium and the British Society for Immunology have published a new report 'The impact of patient and public involvement in the UK Coronavirus Immunology Consortium'. The report celebrates and showcases the positive impact of involving patients and the public in immunology research.
The UK-CIC research initiative brought together laboratory-based scientists and clinicians with the experience and unique perspectives of patient and public contributors. Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in research is vital to make studies more relevant, more effective and improve the quality of research. The PPI panel within UK-CIC provided a platform for regular two-way conversations with researchers to address key questions about the implications of the research as well as discussions about what was important to the public and patient groups.
This report provides practical suggestions of how to bridge the gap between basic research and the lived experiences of patients and the public. By sharing learning and knowledge from UK-CIC and presenting the beneficial influence that PPI brings to science, this report hopes to act as a guide on how to include more PPI in immunology research.
