Thushan is Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Physician in the Department of Infection, Immunity and Cardiovascular Disease at the University of Sheffield and South Yorkshire Regional Department of Infection and Tropical Medicine. He returned to Sheffield in 2019 after being based at the MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM since 2016 for his Wellcome Trust Intermediate Clinical Fellowship, exploring the mucosal and systemic immunity to live attenuated influenza vaccine in children. He was also previously based between The Gambia and University College London 2007 - 2011 during his MRC Clinical Research Training fellowship on HIV-2 molecular epidemiology and antigen-specific immunity. Aligned with his interests in global health science, Thushan continues to be a Visiting Scientist and Principal Investigator in the Vaccines and Immunity Theme at the MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM and an Honorary Associate Professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Thushan is involved in several aspects of SARS-CoV-2 research, leading the COG-UK viral sequencing team in Sheffield, as well as studies of antigen-specific T-cell immunity as part of the ISARIC4C consortium and the PITCH study in healthcare workers. He is also involved in SARS-CoV-2 surveillance, sequencing and immunity studies in The Gambia and Ghana.
